Sell Vintage Hatpins (Sometimes Termed 'Hat Pins') On EBay

Notice those one and two word descriptions common throughout the world which can cause problems if a potential bidder searches eBay for 'hatpins' while you've chosen 'hat pins'. This means it's usually best to use both versions for your listing, especially in the title.

Hat Pins / Hatpins have sharp pinpoint tips and were used to fix the hat to the wearer's hair to avoid the hat falling off or being blown away.

Hats Caps

Here's something else you need to know which will send you rushing for hat pins to list on eBay. Hat pins are relatively small, all are roughly the same size and format, they cost much the same price to post, they can be listed hundreds of times from one basic eBay template. They are among the easiest items to describe and pack, post and deliver!

As hats became bigger round about the early 1900s, hat pins also grew in size, some looking like dangerous weapons and often including massive gem stones or carved from large pieces of horn and ivory so making the pin extremely heavy for the wearer but definitely increasing values over their demure Victorian counterparts.

Hat pins fell out of favour in the 1920s when short hair became popular and women began wearing head-hugging cloche type caps that needed no pin or they wore no hat at all.

From that time the hat pin industry fell into decline and whatever pins were made later were functional, not decorative, and were usually poor quality.

So it follows that, for eBay sales, you should opt for good quality, nicely decorated pins from the pre-1920s and for anything after that time go for quality materials like silver, Bakelite, tortoiseshell.

Hat Pins - my preferred rendition - seem to attract higher prices on the American site, and really elaborate types in good condition, especially from Victorian or earlier times. In the following examples, the first and last items sold on the UK site, the others on eBay.com

- 'Antique Hatpin Large Size Enamelled&With Bullrush Spray' fetched £157 (notice three words squashed together in that listing, it does not look good, albeit the listing worked well)

- 'Victorian Period hatpin, Circa 1859 -1910' went for £145.50

- 'Antique 19th C Facetted Irish Hat Pin Holder / 12 Hatpins' went for £131.04 (notice how the seller very cleverly included both versions of the product name in the title).

- 'Edwardian enamel hatpin bird subject circa 1901 - 1910' sold at £122.59

- 'Antique Charles Horner Silver Enamel Hatpin / Hat Pin' sent for £103.99 (another clever use of both versions of the product name)
